Look closely and there is a not just a lost street in this photograph.
The picture shows High Road near Grove Green Road, Leyton, in 1956. (Image courtesy of Vestry House Museum picture archive.)
But aside from the row of houses, among them a removals business, the sign welcomes people to the Borough of Leyton, with distances along the A11 to Green Man, Wanstead, and Woodford.
In this photo of the same street, High Road near Harrow Green, Leytonstone, only the three-storey building on the very far right seems to have survived.
The next photo shows High Road, Leyton, looking north from Holy Trinity Church in 1975. (Image courtesy of Vestry House Museum picture archive.)
The adverts on the side of the building are for Guinness, Ovaltine Cold, Wisk washing powder, Brooke Bond tea, confectioner Mackintosh's, who made Quality Street and Rolos, Tide washing powder, and KitKat.
The same buildings are there today, but with paint covering much of the detail of the shop on the right.
