A planning application to convert a former car showroom into an autistic school has been backed by Epping Town Council.
The proposed 12-classroom school along High Street in Epping, was registered to the planning committee by Options Autism Ltd on Tuesday, December 24.
During the meeting on Tuesday January 14, councillors emphasised the protection of the historic Grade II listed water tower, located next to the proposed site, should be taken into account.
Councillor Michael Wright said: "I think they have done well with the design, and it is needed. I think we ought to support it."
Various alterations and extensions have been listed for the school, which include a small entrance lobby extension to the water tower, an external play area and seven parking spaces.
Councillor Barbara Scruton said she believed there would have been "far more" cars using the site when it was a garage.
She added: "I would have thought there is less pollution with this (the school) than when it was a garage."
Councillor Mari-Louise Whitbread said: "It looks very attractive and I imagine there may be a need for schools for autistic children on the Central Line."
