Walthamstow Garden Party has been voted as one of the most environmentally friendly festivals in the world.

The free-to-attend festival, produced by the Barbican in partnership with Waltham Forest Council, has been named one of the 37 recipients of the Green Festival Award 2019.

The award was presented by A Greener Festival, a not-for-profit committed to helping events around the world become more sustainable.

Set to return for a seventh time in July 2020, Walthamstow Garden Party first took place in 2014.

Every year over 30,000 people flock to Lloyd Park for the annual weekend event.

In 2019 the festival introduced a reusable cup scheme where patrons paid a deposit for a cup to use for the whole day and return at the end.

The scheme saved almost 27,000 single use plastic cups from going into landfill and recycling; single use plastic was also banned across the site.

At last year’s festival, 60 per cent of bar stock was sourced from within two miles of the festival site and 53 per cent of traders were serving vegetarian/vegan food.

Additionally, out of the 2,873 performers and participants, 72 per cent were from the borough.

Organisers have also signed the Festival Vision 2025 pledge, which aims to achieve a 50 per cent reduction in festival-related annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2025.

Walthamstow Garden Party was presented its award at a ceremony held at Eurosonic Noorderslag, Netherlands on Friday, January 17.

Waltham Forest Council’s declared a climate emergency in April 2019. The council has since formed a climate emergency commission made up of experts from across the energy, waste and environmental sectors to help shape response to the global challenge of climate change
