Police have said a man was killed in a crash on a dual carriageway yesterday.

A white Mercedes C Class left the A405 in Bricket Wood at around 6.45am, before crashing into a bridge.

Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, the man, who was in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say no one else was travelling in the vehicle.

Police are investigating how and why the driver came to leave the road.

Hertfordshire Constabulary says the silver Mercedes C Class hit a bridge after leaving the road while travelling towards the M1.

The bridge is a footbridge that runs over the A405. Barriers have since been put around the staircase which has been damaged.

A cordon near the footbridge on Sunday

The vehicle came to a rest on its roof further down the A405.

The engine became detached from the vehicle and was lying in the road, and the entire front of the Mercedes was wrecked.

Yesterday, a forensic tent was erected close to the Mercedes and the dual carriageway was completely cordoned off.

The A405 was shut in both directions for nine hours between the M1 and M25 junctions, with the northbound carriageway opening just after 4pm.

Watford Observer:

The southbound carriageway was running by 5.40pm.

Forensics were carrying out investigations yesterday and the police are now appealing for witnesses.

PS Ian Manley, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire road policing unit, said: "Our thoughts are with the friends and family of the victim at this very difficult time. They are currently being supported by specially trained officers, and we ask that their privacy is respected.

"We are appealing for the public’s help so that we can give them some answers. Did you see the collision, or the events leading up to it? Did you happen to catch any footage on a dash cam?

"If you saw the incident or have any information or dash cam footage that you think could assist our investigation, please get in touch with us as soon as possible."
