A woman's uncle who suffers from dementia is hoping to raise funds for further research by running the London Marathon 2020.

Kerry Boyne, from Loughton, became inspired to take on the 26.2-mile race after discovering dementia one of the top ten causes of death in UK.

Her uncle John, who is currently living with the disease, described him as "her hero" is cared for by his wife Peggy and other family members.

She said: "He is a true gentleman and an incredible man. He is our hero and I hope to be his hero on the day of the marathon. Never stop singing and smiling uncle John, we all love you so much.

"Caring for a family member living with dementia can be challenging, rewarding and can impact physical and psychological health."

Dementia is the only condition without a treatment to prevent, cure or slow its progression and more than half of the UK public know someone who has been diagnosed.

Ms Boyne is aiming to raise at least £2000 for Alzheimer's Research UK for her first ever marathon.

"When times get tough along the marathon course, I will be thinking of my auntie Peggy who cares each day for her husband," she explained. "With every step I take I will be thinking of my amazing " John and auntie Peggy.

"Those running for Alzheimer's Research UK have become a big family and we share our experiences every day- it is just a shame that we have all met because we are linked some way or another to this awful disease."

The Virgin Money London Marathon 2020 will take place on Sunday, April 26.
