A PRIMARY school in Southend has closed due to staff absence as a result of the coronavirus.

Victory Park Academy, at Wentworth Road, in Southchurch, released a statement today.

There are no confirmed cases at this stage however, several members of staff and families have gone into self-isolation.

The headteacher, Mark Aspel, said: "Due to the unprecedented staff absence across the academy as a result of COVID-19 we are taking the decision reluctantly to close our academy and related services until further notice.

"We will be making regular welfare calls to our pupils and their families.

"Tutors will provide work via our website or providing work packs.

"Educational resources can also be found on Twinkl and BBC bitesize."

Schools are set to remain open amid the coronavirus pandemic, with the Government stating that schools would stay open, but "the situation is under review.

Reports says the education secretary is to make a statement later today.

The Eastwood Academy, St. Bernards High School, and St. Thomas More High School, have all announced partial closures today with only some year groups attending.
