Waltham Forest markets are now closed after residents expressed concern at crowds of shoppers last weekend.
The council announced today (March 25) that all markets except Walthamstow Market are closed “until further notice”.
Walthamstow Market is closed for all goods except stalls of fruit, vegetables and other groceries with “social distancing measures in place”.
This comes after people criticised the council for allowing Lloyd Park Market and the Sunday Social market to remain open on Sunday, with both reportedly attracting large crowds.
Lily Dettmer asked the council on Twitter: “Why was both the Lloyd Park food market & Sunday social on this weekend?
“These are not essential food markets - they’re the type of that people go to mingle. I had to go to Boots to pick up a prescription for my sick son through crowds of people.”
Lloyd Park Market tweeted on Sunday that it was “taking all precautions to keep everyone safe” but announced its decision to close until further notice the next day.
The council has now closed all libraries, including Walthamstow Library, as well as its refuse and recycling centres and the reception area at Cedar Wood House.
