Coronavirus death toll continues to climb at Whipps Cross Hospital's NHS Trust

Neighbouring Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust announced only one new death, after announcing none yesterday.

Barts Health NHS Trust has so far confirmed 280 deaths since the start of the epidemic, compared to 136 at BHRUT, which manages King George Hospital and Queen's Hospital.

Barts, which manages five east London hospitals including Whipps Cross, is one of the worst-affected NHS trusts in London and has had a death toll in the double figures almost every day of the month so far.

It is likely that the number of deaths in all areas managed by the trusts is even higher than reported, as many are believed to have died in care homes or the community.

The other hospitals managed by Barts are St Bartholomew’s Hospital, the Royal London Hospital, Mile End Hospital and Newham Hospital, all located in inner London boroughs.

The NHS does not provide details on where deaths have occurred in each trust.

BHRUT, by contrast, is understood to be "coping" with the pandemic and yesterday celebrated the discharge of a 60-year-old diabetic grandfather, who had spent more than a week in intensive care.
