Barts Health NHS Trust, which manages Whipps Cross and four other hospitals, has the highest number of confirmed coronavirus-related deaths in London.

The east London trust has overtaken London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust, the previous worst-affected in the capital.

Since the start of the pandemic, the trust has confirmed 589 deaths among people who tested positive for the virus.

The worst day for deaths, according to current figures, was April 8, when 30 people died from the virus.

At the start of May, the trust "discovered a number of cases where official death notification forms were not transcribed onto the NHS online reporting tool", according to a statement on its website, which has now been rectified.

Today, the trust confirmed only two new deaths.

Neighbouring Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT), which manages King George Hospital in Ilford and Queen's Hospital in Romford, announced one death.

BHRUT hit 400 deaths since the start of the pandemic at the start of this week.

However, according to Public Health England, 545 people died from the virus yesterday, a sharp spike compared to previous days, where the death toll was largely under 200.

This figure includes both those in hospitals and those in care homes and the community.
