Waltham Forest Council is reopening the borough’s markets as lockdown begins to ease.

Customers will be served one at a time and are asked to use contactless payment when possible, stay two metres apart and only touch items they are buying.

The borough’s most well-known market and Europe’s longest street market on Walthamstow High Street will open from tomorrow (June 2).

Lloyd Park Market and two Sunday markets have already reopened, according to a council newsletter, while Chingford markets are planning to reopen later this month.

The council wrote: “Waltham Forest is famous for its open air markets and in line with new Government advice these will now begin a phased re-opening.

“Market officers will be on duty to help customers and traders keep safe.”

The operator of two markets in Chingford is “still considering” when to reopen according to the council.

North Chingford Market is expected to reopen from June 6 and Chingford Mount Market from June 27.

At Walthamstow High Street market, some traders will not be in their usual places as stalls spread along the street to minimise the risk of infection.

The Waltham Forest Farmer's Market, which has remained open to sell food throughout lockdown, expects more traders to return over the next few weeks.
