A PARTY-GOER who left a mess on downland has been fined after leaving his name at the scene.

Beer crates, disposable barbecues and even a giant gazebo were left at Stanmer Park on the edge of Brighton after a birthday party on Saturday.

Afterwards Albert Brazil was tracked down and fined by officials after it was discovered he had left an invoice for the gazebo at the scene. The document contained his name and address.

Publicans at The Stoneham pub in Portland Road, Hove, who share a similar address, told how they contacted Brazil’s landlord and they made him clean up the mess.

He has now been slapped with a £400 fine from Brighton and Hove City Council, which has promised a similar fate for other litterbugs.

Councillor Anne Pissaridou, chairwoman of the environment committee, said: “We investigated the incident and, based on evidence provided to us, have concluded that an offence of flytipping has been committed by Albert Brazil and a £400 fine has been issued to him.

“Our message is clear – leaving rubbish behind for others to clear up is an environmental offence and we will continue to track down and fine those who spoil our parks.”

Litter including plastic bottles, balloons and food packaging was found scattered across the grass on Sunday morning, as the gazebo flapped in the wind.

A happy birthday sign could be seen dangling hanging off one of its poles.

An invoice for the gazebo was also spotted, which contained Albert Brazil’s name and address.

He shares an address with The Stoneham pub in Portland Road, which was wrongly implicated in the offence.

A manager at the pub said: “We are aware that someone left a disgusting and inexcusable mess in our beautiful park a few days ago, we would like to let everyone know that this isn’t anything to do with The Stoneham Pub or its staff, this has been caused by a nearby tenant in the privately rented flats.

“We contacted the landlord who acted immediately to get the mess cleaned up by the resident.

“This is utterly disgraceful behaviour, and our staff and owner of The Stoneham are devastated that we are being focused on for blame.”

Martin Osborne, councillor for Hollingdean and Stanmer, said: “Stanmer Park is one of the nicest green spaces to visit in Brighton but with several incidents of flytipping and a serious case of vandalism recently it is not getting the respect it deserves. We request that when people use the park they take responsibility for their own actions and respect the environment by taking away their litter and disposing of it appropriately.”
