East London councils have explained how they will keep shoppers safe following the reopening of the nation’s high streets.

Shops in Waltham Forest, Redbridge and Havering reopened on Monday (June 15) as lockdown measures continue to ease.

Measures taken include one-way systems in large shopping centres like the Exchange in Ilford and the Mall in Walthamstow.

The Government has issued a fund to local councils to reopen high streets safely, although no council questioned was able to confirm how much they expected the project to cost.

In Redbridge, the council worked with the Ilford Business Improvement District and local police to implement measures to improve safety.

These include markers to help keep people two metres apart, message boards, hand sanitiser units and social distancing information boxes.

Redbridge council leader Jas Athwal, said: "We're naturally pleased that the shops have reopened following an extremely challenging period for them financially, but it is critical that they operate in a way that keeps local people safe.

"We would please urge people to stick to the social distancing rules, especially maintaining a two-metre distance.”

Asked how much money was being spent, he added: “At this stage, it is too early to understand the cost implications to all the partner organisations involved.”

In Waltham Forest, Cllr Simon Miller, responsible for economic growth and housing development, said the council was doing “all (it) can” to increase space for shoppers.

Council officers will ensure non-essential business comply with coronavirus guidelines by completing risk assessments and limiting the number of customers, along with a number of other measures.

Shops have also been instructed to display a notice to reassure employees, customers and other visitors that guidance has been followed.

In a video address, Cllr Miller encouraged residents to “shop local” to help small businesses affected by the pandemic and to walk or cycle to shops instead of taking public transport.

Yesterday Mayor of London Sadiq Khan called for a new law to make it mandatory for people to wear masks in shops and other enclosed spaces, as is currently the case for public transport.
