The forecourt at Watford Junction is to undergo a makeover over the next few months, which will include the addition of large freestanding letters spelling 'WATFORD'.

As part of major plans to renovate the town's main train station, the forecourt will see new paving, lighting, planting, seating, and signage to make the area more attractive for the eight million plus visitors who use the station every year.

The biggest new attraction will be these giant letters spelling out 'Watford' which going by images shared by Watford Borough Council will actually double up as seating.

Watford Observer:

Watford's mayor Peter Taylor said: "Eight million people a year travel through Watford Junction station. I am really excited to kickstart these works to bring our station into the 21st century.

"This will make the station forecourt a more welcoming and interesting place and will be a much better first impression for people coming to our town."

A heritage trail will also be introduced, starting at Watford Junction, and taking walkers through the town centre.

In order for the improvements to happen, bike parking is being moved from the forecourt to a secure bike parking facility just seconds away in a lane just off the car park entry road.

This custom built facility provides 300 individual, under cover, cycle racks along with cycle repair tools and a compressed air device that anyone can use for free.

In advance of works starting on the June 29, all bikes will need to be removed from the forecourt area from Monday (June 22) when the current racks and stands are being removed.

The forecourt work is expected to be completed in October.

Watford Observer:

The project is part of a larger improvement programme to Watford Junction station concourse which is expected to start in spring 2021.

This includes a new ticket hall and entrance.

There are further plans to create a passenger bridge over the railway line.
