Waltham Forest police will discuss tensions following the national Black Lives Matter protests at a meeting tonight.

The Waltham Forest Stop and Search group, which last met in January, scrutinises police and aims to “identify learning and better ways of doing things”.

It was set up in response to the Macpherson report, which criticised the police for “professional incompetence, institutional racism and a failure of leadership” after the botched murder investigation of Stephen Lawrence.

Members of the group will also question local police on their use of force, tasers, section 60s and whether the borough’s non-white residents are more likely to be fined for breaking lockdown.

Neighbouring Redbridge Council has no equivalent meetings set up to scrutinise the work of local police.

The meeting will be livestreamed on Youtube from 6pm tonight and can be viewed here.
