Redbridge Council could be named the best council in the UK this October.

The council has been shortlisted for the Local Authority of the Year award organised by local authority magazine Municipal Journal.

In May, the council’s planning service was shortlisted for its own honour in the National Planning Awards, something some residents have vocally objected to.

Council leader Cllr Jas Athwal said: “Being shortlisted for this award is testament to the hard work of all our incredible council staff.

“Every day they go above and beyond to deliver for our residents.

“This year in particular, as we all pull together to navigate our way through the COVID-19 outbreak, our staff have been unfaltering in their commitment to supporting our local communities.

“They’ve worked incredibly hard to ensure the services our residents rely on the most remained on course throughout the pandemic.

“At Redbridge we are lucky enough to have some of the most talented, caring and committed colleagues helping drive forward the work of the council. A big thank you to each and every one of them.”

Some of the achievements for which the council was recognised include an “outstanding” rating from Ofsted for local children’s services and the regeneration of Ilford Town Centre.
