THE Extinction Rebellion (XR) Furness branch is backing calls for a clean air zone in Ulverston.

Environmental group Clean Air for Ulverston wants cars banned from the town centre.

A spokesperson for the environmental group said: “We support Clean Air for Ulverston and others who want traffic to be permanently banned from Ulverston town centre. And we are pleased that the majority of town councillors also appear to support a ban.

"So many people have commented on how much more pleasant it was during lockdown to walk around town without breathing in toxic fumes - which we know kill people and damage children’s lungs.

"It was wonderful being able to hear birdsong and talk to people without being drowned out by the sound of grinding metal.

Next week's Two Tin Tuesday food collection covers a wider area, from Walney through to Ulverston.

The XR spokesperson added that the idea was not only to help people but also to build community resilience.

"It will be needed in the future as never before," the spokesperson said.

"The coronavirus crisis has given us clues on how to deal with the climate emergency. The main lesson is not to to delay - but to act now.

"And, of course, to follow the science."

The group is again asking people to 'host' collection boxes, leaving them outside or near their homes for donations of food and sanitary products, from 11am on Tuesday, July 28.

Volunteers will collect the boxes after 3pm.

The donations are this time going to Spring Mount, a group that provides food parcels to people in need across Walney and Barrow.

Anyone who would like to host a box or help with collections is asked to email twotintuesday@gmail.com.

Up to the end of last month, XR Furness had collected more than 4,000 kg of food, toiletries and cleaning products - the food equating to more than 10,000 meals.
