The Duke of Edinburgh, who has died at the age of 99, visits to Hertfordshire and East London in the past included opening a new science buildings and gardens at a historic house.

Buckingham Palace announced Prince Philip passed away peacefully at Windsor Castle this morning.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has paid tribute to the husband of Queen Elizabeth II.

He said: "We mourn today with Her Majesty the Queen, we offer our condolences to her and all her family and we give thanks as a nation and a kingdom for the extraordinary work of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh."

The Duke of Edinburgh visited the University of Hertfordshire in November 2016 to open a new science building.

His visit included a tour of the new building that brought together the university’s science facilities with a teaching and laboratory space for students and staff.

The £50m building houses laboratories, research technology and areas for informal learning and socialising.

Vice chancellor of the university Professor Quintin McKellar said: “We are delighted His Royal Highness came to visit the University today and opened our fantastic new science building at the College Lane Campus.

“The building marks another great development of the campus and will give students and staff a state-of-the-art space for research and learning”.

Prince Philip also accompanied the Queen on a visit to Ilford in 2012 where they opened the gardens at the historic Valentines Mansion.
