An 86-year-old man has said he has “plenty of years left on the clock” as he eyes a 1,000-mile walking challenge covering Barnet, Enfield and Haringey.

Peter Murray will tackle the march in aid of North London Hospice after being inspired by Captain Tom Moore’s fundraising for the NHS.

“I love walking,” said the 86-year-old. “It gets me out and I meet lots of lovely people and fill them in on what I’m doing it for.

“I adopt a Legionaire’s slow marching walk, which conserves energy.

“Even though I tend to push my wife’s trolley or a wheelchair to give me a bit more stability I can still cover up to 30 miles a day.”

True to his word the former businessman started his new journey at the start of National Walking Month, which he hopes will raise thousands of pounds for the hospice that cared for one of his sisters.

The father-of-six, who was born in Ireland and moved to London in 1950, will take several months to complete his epic challenge.

He plans to walk three times a week from 9am to 6pm and break the distance into sections within Barnet, Enfield and Haringey – areas which the hospice supports.

Peter, who lives in London with his wife Helen, added: “I’ve been a supporter of North London Hospice for many years.

“I used to collect bags of donations and deliver them to my local charity shop.

“All three of my sisters received care in a hospice and I’ve seen the incredible support they provide to families.”

He continued: “I knew I was going to do my next walk for North London Hospice and hope people will donate when they see me out and about or get inspired to take on challenges of their own.

“You’re never too old!”

It comes after Peter previously completed a 1,000-mile walk in aid of Whipps Cross Hospital in December.

People can follow his progress on the hospice’s social media channels or on Peter’s Facebook page ‘petermurraycastlebar’.

He will let followers know where he will be walking so they can give him a wave.
