Waltham Forest Council will install a further 206 electric vehicle charging points across the borough by April next year.

The announcement comes as the ultra-low emission zone (ULEZ) expansion comes into place which will charges drivers of vehicles which do not comply with minimum emissions standards by £12.50 a day.

The plans for extra charging points will consist of 122 residential 5.5kW sockets, and 84 fast 22kW charging sockets, totalling to a minimum of 412.

The funding for the rollout of this scheme comes from grants given by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles, Virgin Media Park and Charge project, and the council's climate emergency funding.

Cllr Clyde Loakes, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “I’m pleased to announce our plans to double the number of electric charging points, across Waltham Forest as part of our response to the climate emergency as we move towards creating a greener and more sustainable borough.

“In addition, we’re also expanding our cycle hangar and cycle hub network and putting in more segregated cycle track, helping support more people to cycle more often and more safely.

“We’re helping to decarbonise transport in Waltham Forest, making it easier for everyone to do their bit to help our environment and reduce harmful emissions, making our neighbourhoods safer and cleaner places for everyone to enjoy.”

This project is part of a wider scheme to become a greener borough by working towards a network of infrastructure for electric vehicle charging.

By 2025 the council aims to achieve include all controlled parking zones having at least two residential sockets, 80 per cent of households being within a 200m walk from a public fast charging socket, every town centre to have a public rapid charging points and at least two rapid charging hubs in the borough.

They are working with working with car clubs to help them in electrifying their fleets, on top of this, there are other schemes in the borough that promote sustainable travel
