It's five years ago this week since an east London pub was preparing to reopen after undergoing a facelift to "attract the young and old at the same time".

A traditional Irish pub has had a facelift to meet the need of the "hip" newcomers moving into the area.

O'Neills at Green Man Roundabout in Leytonstone High Road sits on a site where there has been a pub since the 1800s.

General manager Barry McLeavy said the newly refurbished pub will suit millennials looking for something more contemporary than a local pub.

He said: "Leytonstone has become quite a hip place to be and there's a lot of new people moving in and buying houses.

"Before it was more of a bedsit town but the demographics have changed in recent years.

"We are looking to attract the young and the old at the same time."

The pub's menu has also been refreshed to include tapas while staying true to its Irish roots with Irish beef dishes.

American and Irish whiskeys as well as London brewed craft beers are on offer.

But retail business manager Darren Bichero said although the new image is modern they are not forgetting where they came from.

Mr Bichero said: "We stripped out everything because it was stale and outdated and have replaced it with a more contemporary feel.

"But we're not forgetting where we came from. Our motto is bringing back the craic.

"There's pictures of Ireland on the walls and we will be showing GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) matches, rugby and boxing on TV.

"We're very excited because it's what our customers have been asking for."

Duty manager Cian Power, who is originally from Dublin, added: "Being Irish I think I know what people are looking for and Irish pubs are not really what they used to be.

"Going back home to Dublin I can see there's a huge demand for new craft beers and we've got some great ones here."

The venue, which can hold up to 400 people, features a disco room on weekends with live bands and a DJ.

It will officially open on Friday, April 7.
