Last week’s killing of rapper in east London took place at an “unauthorised music event” in the grounds of Woodford Town Football Club.

Lamar Jackson, known by his stage name Hypo, died after being stabbed at Woodford Town FC’s grounds in the early hours of 3rd June.

Laurie John-Phillip, 32, of Enfield has been charged with murder and possession of a bladed article.

At an urgent review of the football club’s licence this morning, the Met alleged the party was an “unauthorised music event” that breached licensing law as CCTV did not cover all public areas and recorded music was not permitted.

The Met says one of the football club’s directors had rented the grounds to promoter Pure Life Entertainment, who erected a marquee and sold 500-700 tickets for a “day soiree” called Bottles and Modelling.

Superintendent Brigid Beehag-Fisher said that the Met have “serious concerns” about future events that could result in “further serious crime”.

She added: “DJs and recorded music were in play at the event but the premises licence does not allow for regulated entertainment.

“Therefore this was a high risk unauthorised music event which resulted in a murder.”

The Redbridge Council licensing committee agreed with the Met’s suggestion that the football pitches, athletic track and field be removed from the club’s licence, so only the clubhouse bar can be used to consume alcohol between 11am and 11pm.

Redbridge Council helped Woodford Town return to the borough in August 2021 after building a new grandstand, changing room, gym facilities and multi-club room at Ashton Playing Fields.

The playing fields is managed by the council’s arms-length leisure management body Vision RCL and is also home to Crostyx Hockey Club and Woodford Green Athletics Club.

Pure Life Entertainment and Redbridge Council have been approached for comment.

A full licensing review must be held within 28 days.

Woodford Town FC club secretary Jem Safer said: “All at Woodford Town were horrified by the loss of life.

“We aim to give the community a place to watch football in a safe and welcoming environment.

“We have had a full football season that was incident free.

“We hosted an event in good faith, mistakes were made, and we as a completely voluntary organisation will learn from them.

“We will work with the council and the police to make sure this never happens again.”

Police continue to appeal for witnesses and information in connection with Lamar’s death.

Det Ch Insp Laurence Smith said: “Lamar’s family are grieving and need your help.

“If you saw anything, or managed to record the incident, then please call us.

“Lamar’s family are desperately trying to find out what happened.”

Anyone who saw what happened or has any information that may assist the investigation is asked to call police on 101 and quote reference CAD 66/03Jun.
