Union leaders will speak to the public about why workers are going on strike.

With rail and postal workers having taken industrial action and nurses, higher education staff and civil servants having voted on strikes, Waltham Forest Trades Council is holding a solidarity rally next week.

Officials from the RMT, the National Education Union, Unite and Unison will speak, with representatives from the Communication Workers Union, the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF) and the University and College Union (UCU) also invited.

The rally will take place at William Morris Community Centre in Greenleaf Road, Walthamstow, on Tuesday, December 13 at 7pm. People can also attend online.

Those speaking at the rally will be:

  • Nathan Wallace of RMT Central Line East
  • Paul Phillips of Waltham Forest NEU
  • Len Hockey of Unite at Barts Hospital Trust
  • Jordan Rivera of UNISON at Homerton Hospital

Waltham Forest Trades Council secretary Linda Taaffe said: “The thousands of brave trade union members who have been striking for months now to win a sizeable pay increase, have lifted the spirits of all workers.

"They have inspired even more to follow their example, and motivated younger workers to get joined up in a union.

"It now looks increasingly likely that there could be generalised strike action in the new year.

"This meeting is to help push back this intransigent Tory government with all our fellow trade unionists and make Waltham Forest a bastion for serious struggle.”
