A STUDY which claims that traffic congestion in the region could cost businesses and residents up to £2 billion per year by 2021 is further proof that an A414-M11 link road is needed, according to Harlow MP Bill Rammell.

He was speaking following publication of a study by the East of England Development Agency.

In addition to calculating the cost to the region from congestion, the study also concluded that there are particular hotspots where congestion is causing most damage to the regional and national economy.

Included in the study’s ‘priority corridors for intervention’ are the M11 and West Anglia Mainline Corridor.

Mr Rammell said: “The results of this report published by EEDA – the first of its kind which allows the region to understand the economic costs of traffic congestion and where it is having the greatest impact – clearly underlines the strong case for a new A414/M11 link road in Harlow.

“The cost of congestion in our region to both businesses and residents, particularly in hotspots such as the M11, is unacceptable.

“While recognising that such a major project will take some years to complete, we need to take action urgently to ensure that the situation is improved for future generations.”

Mr Rammell reported success in July in his campaign for an A414/M11 link road following a meeting with Transport Minister Rosie Winterton at which the potential for the road was discussed under reviewed funding plans.

Rosie Winterton visited Harlow earlier this month to see first-hand the transport challenges in the town.
