SHOPPERS hoping to catch a glimpse of a famous face when Redbridge's Christmas lights are turned on next week are in for a bit of a disappointment.

The tradition of inviting minor celebrities to flick the switch to mark the festive season has not been followed this year - with mayor Thomas Chan due to kick off the event outside Ilford Town Hall on Wednesday.

The Wanstead ward councillor is a popular figure throughout the borough but is unlikely to draw the crowds of screaming teenagers enjoyed by former Hollyoaks actor Guy Burnet who turned on the lights last year.

Despite the lack of stars, a wide range of other attractions have been laid on to mark the event including fireworks, music and food.

A council spokesman said: "Local radio station Time FM will be bringing shoppers, live music and dance from 3.30pm and residents can enjoy a spectacular fireworks display launched from the roof of The Mall.

"Characters from the Kenneth More Theatre’s Christmas Panto Snow White will be on hand and snow machines will set the atmosphere.

"During the excitement there will be the chance to grab some tasty snacks as East Essex Farmer’s offer up everything from classic winter warmers to delicious paellas.

"Hungry shoppers who want to expand their pallet can take advantage of the International Food Fare which will be serving up Peruvian food in the town centre from December 16 to 24.

"St Francis Hospice will also be selling a delicious hot winter punch with all purchases being charitable donations to the locally-based hospice."

The big switch on will take place between 4pm and 6.30pm.
