WORK has begun on converting a playing field into a storage area for the Olympic Games.

Contractors moved on to Drapers Field in Leyton this week.

The controversial plans, which will see it closed off to the public until December 2012, include the installation of a 13-metre high tent and 28 storage containers at the site.

Floodlights and two fences are also due to be erected.

Residents and nearby Montessori Prep School objected amid concerns over the impact of the site on the surrounding community and the loss of sports facilities in the Olympic year.

But the council said a £5.5million compensation package for new sports facilities from the Olympic Delivery Authority made the deal worthwhile in the long run.
