MORE than 2,400 motorists have been fined £130 for driving in Olympic VIP-only lanes since the start of the Games, it has been revealed.

The temporary restrictions, which were introduced to make journeys quicker and easier for Games officials, media and athletes, are in place on multiple key routes across the capital including the A12 through Leytonstone.

Transport for London (TfL) told the BBC that the number fined was "low" and meant the system had worked well.

In contrast, around 3,000 drivers are fined every day in the Congestion Charge zone in central London.

The Games lane on the A12 has caused some congestion during rush-hour but has otherwise not had a major impact on the borough.

The closure of the slip-road exit onto the A12 at the Green Man roundabout has caused knock-on congestion but, following complaints, TfL has since relaxed the restrictions at some peak times to ease the jams.

The restrictions will be in place until August 14, and then be re-introduced during the Paralympic Games between August 27 and September 11.

Motorists and cyclists who go into the Games lanes without proper permission could be fined £130. Cyclists can use some kerbside Games lanes but not on roads such as the A12.
