ITV's latest drama The Tower will begin airing tonight, based on the book Post Mortem from author Kate London.

London had been a Metropolitan Police Officer for eight years before retiring in 2014, and then used her experiences in that role in her writing.

Post Mortem was her first book, and has been adapted into a three-part drama for ITV.

Speaking on the conception of the series to the Radio Times, London said: “Within a matter of weeks [of joining the police] I was writing – not for publication, but because I just had to get down on paper the world I encountered: its complexity, laughter, loyalty, the moral conflicts and the dangers that were not only physical.

“Policing showed me London in a way no other job could. The product of this experience was my first novel, Post Mortem.”

The plot of the series focuses on a veteran beat cop and a teenage girl falling to their deaths from a tower block in south-east London.

Left alive on the roof are a five-year-old boy and rookie police officer Lizzie Griffiths.

Within hours, Lizzie has disappeared, and Detective Sergeant Sarah Collins is charged with leading the investigation.

Gemma Whelan, who played the recurring part of Yara Greyjoy on Game of Thrones, has the leading role of DS Collins.

The Tower begins airing at 9pm on ITV on Monday, November 8, with the following two episodes airing at 9pm on Tuesday, November 9 and Wednesday, November 10.
