The Labour party has selected a teacher and long-time activist as its parliamentary candidate in Hertsmere.

Holly Kal-Weiss, who has lived in Chipping Barnet for 28 years, was chosen ahead of four other candidates following a hustings in Borehamwood on Sunday.

Ms Kal-Weiss has been a Labour voter ever since she became a British citizen in 2006, joining the party in May 2015.

Following her victory, the social worker-turned-teacher, who works with dyslexic children in Shenley, said: "I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with such an amazing Labour team to represent the constituents of Hertsmere.

"I will work tirelessly to listen to and support the community, work to meet the needs of all residents and create a constituency which values all its people and the environment."

Hertsmere Labour party chairman Dr Dan Ozarow added: "We have all been incredibly impressed by the passion and commitment Holly has shown in campaigning alongside us on a range of issues that are affecting our local community.

"Holly is someone who is deeply moved by injustice and desperate to see a Labour government end the austerity that has plagued Britain for over a decade, so that we can create a society for the many not the few." The Brexit party previously announced its parliamentary candidate for Hertsmere.

Graham Shore, who was brought up in Barnet but now lives in Camden, says he knows Hertsmere "reasonably well" and says he is the man to represent constituents' views and interests.

Hertsmere voters voted to leave by 50.8 per cent to 49.2 per cent.

Mr Shore says one of the biggest issues in Hertsmere is housing and also wants to help improve transport services and tackle overcrowding.

Hertsmere Liberal Democrats announced last month that its parliamentary candidate is Stephen Barrett.

Mr Barrett works in secondary education and has been campaigning for liberal values and retaining the UK's place "at the heart of Europe".

Writing on the party's website, he said: "I will be campaigning to win in Hertsmere - building on our recent successes in the local elections in May and also in the European elections where we finished ahead of both the Conservative and Labour parties.

"Our environment, our schools and our economy all need attention. I will be fighting not just to stop Brexit, but to bring our country back to the centre ground."

Hertsmere MP Oliver Dowden is seeking re-adoption as the Conservative candidate.
