Tottenham Hotspur squeezed through to the last eight of the Capital One cup as they beat Hull City 8-7 on penalties at the end of a thrilling game at White Hart Lane.

Spurs will now face West Ham at home in the next round having overcome Steve Bruce’s side for the second time in four days thanks to their first shoot-out win in eight attempts.

Gylfi Sigurdsson gave Spurs the lead with a goal of the season contender on 16 minutes before a Brad Friedel own goal levelled things up after half time.

Harry Kane rattled the cross bar with a thunderbolt at the end of 90 minutes but extra time was calling and Paul McShane gave Hull the lead nine minutes into the additional 30 minutes with a rifling header from a corner.

Substitute Harry Kane made it 2-2 in the second half of added time with a well taken goal from the edge of the area under pressure before Spurs won a tense penalty shoot-out.

Friedel saved Hull’s first spot kick from McClean but Lamela missed  Spurs’ fourth to level it up and force sudden death, when Elmohamady’s tame spot kick was blocked by Friedel.

It was a gripping end to an entertaining game that started tamely before Sigurdsson’s rocket blasted the game into life.

The Icelandic was fed a pass with his back to goal 25 yards out before he turned his marker on a six pence and rifled the bouncing ball into the top left corner with a pin-point half volley.

It was a goal that stunned Hull City and rewarded Spurs for the lively start they needed after a dour 1-0 win against The Tigers on Sunday.

Prior to Sigurdsson’s wonder strike, Spurs found themselves coming up against the same defensive wall they had failed to effectively break down four days previous.

But they approached the game with more impetus from the start, with Eriksen, Defoe and Paulinho linking well up front, while Sigurdsson and Walker on the flanks kept Hull pegged back inside their own half.

Kaboul headed narrowly wide from Eriksen’s corner on eight minutes before Paulinho flashed wide after a neat one-two with Eriksen on the edge of the box.

Sigurdsson’s goal buoyed the crowd but Spurs creativity dried up and they were sent a warning when Elmohamady fired a stinging low volley to Friedel’s right side which the keeper did well to block, before Kaboul narrowly got to the ball to clear ahead of Danny Graham who was eyeing up the rebound.

Hull replaced Graham up front with Aaron McLean who almost scored with his first touch, dragging a shot narrowly wide from the edge of the box before the visitors took the lead with a fortunate own goal at the end of a neat move that opened Spurs up on 52 minutes.

Boyd’s clever flick sent Elmohamady in behind the back four on the right and he squared the ball past Friedel to Curtis Davies at the back post but the forward only managed to direct the ball back to the goalkeeper who somehow palmed into his own net.

The visitors now had the initiative and forced a corner that was narrowly headed wide but Spurs defended well and began to force some pressure themselves.

Lamela forced a good save from Edin Jakupovic in the Hull goal with a whipped free kick on the edge of the area as Villas-Boas brought on Harry Kane to replace injured substitute Nacir Chadli who lasted just ten minutes.

Sigurdsson had the ball in the back of the net with nine minutes left but the referee rightly blew for a handball from Defoe in the build up.

Spurs piled on the pressure in a frenetic finish to the 90 minutes but Kane’s near miss against the wood work rang in extra time and it was not long before Hull were in front.

Spurs almost went two behind when Gedo fired over from close range before Kane levelled for the home side when he picked up the ball from Defoe on the edge of the area, side-stepped two defenders and aimed his shot neatly into the far right corner.

There was nothing to separate the two sides at the end of added time, forcing a tense penalty shoot-out that Spurs edged.
