Watford produced a commanding first half display as they eased to a 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.

The Hornets took the lead through Etienne Capoue’s long range drive in the 20th minute before Roberto Pereyra’s fourth of the season made it 2-0 just 58 seconds later.

A performance full of inventive attacking play saw Watford dominate the midfield, while Gerard Deulofeu impressed on his maiden start of the season.

Wolves came on stronger in the second-half, but got little change from a Watford defence which remained well-drilled until the last.

Here’s how we rated the Hornets in the West Midlands.

Ben Foster – 6

Watford Observer:

Didn’t really have a lot to do in the Watford goal but did the simple things well and came out well to claim some first-half crosses. His kicking was also accurate.

Kiko Femenia – 7

A constant option wide on the right and linked up well with Will Hughes in a first-half in which Watford were a cut above their opponents.

Was, however, found to be out of position on a number of occasions when Wolves began to press in the second period.

Adrian Mariappa – 7

Repelled everything which came his way and made up for the absence of the suspended Christian Kabasele with ease.

Resolute at the heart of Watford’s defence and was as ever committed to the cause.

Craig Cathcart – 7

Like Mariappa did little wrong as he kept a fairly uninspired Wolves attack under wraps for the whole afternoon.

Adam Masina – 7

Watford Observer:

A solid first start in the Premier League for the Italian as he performed well in both attack and defence. Made one superb intervention as Helder Costa stooped to head towards goal early in the second half.

Will Hughes – 7.5

Hughes was the focal point of some excellent link up play and an elusive figure who kept popping up in space in all sorts of positions. Was involved in the build-up for both goals and was never out of the game.

Etienne Capoue – 8.5

Superb strike to give the Hornets the all-important breakthrough – a goal which brought a previously lacklustre game to life. Has looked a different player ever since Gracia took over and has arguably been Watford’s main man this term.

Abdoulaye Doucoure – 8

Back to his best at the heart Watford’s midfield, Doucoure broke up play superbly and his assist for Capoue’s opener, while only a simple pass, was weighted to perfection for his compatriot to lash home.

Roberto Pereyra – 8.5

Watford Observer:

Took his goal in some style as he found the top corner with the outside of his left foot. A constant threat in and around the box, but it was also the Argentine’s defensive efforts which stood out.

One such occasion saw him track back to deny Wolves a shot on goal after Masina had been dragged inside by his man.

Gerard Deulofeu – 8

A superb way to mark his first start of the season. Deulofeu was given freedom to move about the front line as he played almost alongside Isaac Success in attack.

The Spaniard was a constant threat and created many of Watford’s best openings. His ability to carry the ball at pace adds a new dimension to the Watford attack and scared the Wolves defenders.

Isaac Success – 7

Held the ball up really well as he led the line with typical strength and was a willing runner as he made the Wolves defence work hard.

Saw one shot go a yard or so wide early in the second half and has given Gracia genuine food for thought, especially if Troy Deeney’s hamstring injury is more severe than first thought.

SUBS

Andre Gray – 6.5

Made an impact from the bench after replacing Success and kept Watford on the front foot. Will hope to return for the visit of Huddersfield.

Sebastian Prodl – N/A

Injured just moments after coming on.

Ben Wilmot – N/A

A Premier League debut for the youngster but he had little chance to impress. Still, no doubt a memorable moment.
