Woodford Wells Ladies Seniors tennis side have won the European Clubs team championships after defeating the favourites in the final.

The team of Pat Wire (captain), Libby Eden and Dianne Oakley competed against clubs in their group from Holland, Sweden, Portugal and then in the final against a Great British team from Wimbledon- lakeside.

After making it through to the tournament final, held in Vale De Lobo, Portugal, Woodford won a hard fought match with Wire and Eden playing singles then winning the final doubles to take the title.

Wire said: “We were so pleased and thrilled to win the competition. We were gaining more confidence throughout the tournament but were still taking each came as it comes.

“The Wimbledon side were very good and had somebody in their team who had been ranked number one in the world at over 50, so it was a pleasing win.”

In the National championships the team was represented by Wire, Eden Sheree Campbell, Christine Jolly, Jane Taylor and Oakley.

The team have made it through to the semi-finals against Blackburn.

Wire said: “They are a good side and we are looking forward to playing them and hopefully we can win and get to the final.

She added: “It would be nice to do the double.”
