Former Leyton Orient favourite David Mooney has found himself a new club, with the experienced striker sealing a switch to Royston Town.

Mooney’s second spell with the O’s was brought to an end earlier this month when his contract was terminated by mutual consent.

His departure had been on the cards for some time, with the striker failing to make any of Orient’s match-day squads during the opening weeks of the campaign and head coach Justin Edinburgh previously hinted that the experienced striker was unlikely to be in his plans.

Mooney returned to East London following his release from Southend United in June 2017 shortly after Nigel Travis’ takeover and scored six times in 42 appearances as Orient secured a 13th place finish in the National League last season.

The 33-year-old established himself as a fan favourite at Brisbane Road following a prolific first stint with the O’s and went on to score 57 goals in 212 appearances across his two spells with the club.

Mooney will now link up with former Orient midfielder Steve Castle’s Royston, who currently play in the Southern League Premier Division Central.

Castle, who enjoyed three stints with the O’s during his playing career, has been in charge of the Crows for almost five years and his side currently sit in seventh place in the table following Saturday’s 2-1 win over Tamworth.
