Leytonstone’s Laviai Nielsen suffered heartache at the World Athletics Championships in Doha after Great Britain’s 4x400m relay team were dropped back down to fourth after disqualified Jamaica were reinstated.
Jamaica finished third in the event, behind the USA and Poland, but were initially disqualified after it was ruled that they lined up in the wrong place for their second changeover.
It promoted the quartet of Nielsen, Zoey Clark, Emily Diamond and Jodie Williams to third, which would have taken Britain’s medal total to six, but Jamaica were reinstated on appeal while Britain’s counter-appeal was dismissed.
Nielsen also competed in the women’s 400m event but was eliminated in the semi-final, coming last with a time of 52.94. She had previously come through the first round in third place in a time of 51.52.
Britain’s total of five medals is their worst since they took home just three from the Helsinki championships in 2005. The bronze in Nielsen 4x400m event would have equalled their total from 2017.
