MANCHESTER United look to have finally won the battle to sign Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham.

One of the summer's most lengthy transfer sagas appears to have finally come to an end as the transfer window slammed shut at midnight, with United appearing to have got their man.

At one stage it seemed as if United's bitter rivals Manchester City would try and trump the Red Devils by signing the Bulgarian, although in the end those reports failed to materialise as the Eastlands outfit secured their own big-money signing in Real Madrid's Robinho.

That had, however come after City had a reported £30million bid accepted by Spurs for Berbatov, as new owners the Abu Dhabi United Group made some huge bids for some of Europe's top name stars on a crazy final day of the transfer window.

But Berbatov only had eyes it seems for United and while he arrived in the north-west, he headed straight for a meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson at United's Carrington training complex before having a medical.

Sky Sports then pictured Berbatov arriving inside Old Trafford with Ferguson and chief executive David Gill.

But as midnight came and went there was still no official conformation that the deal had gone through, although it seems very unlikely after today's events that Berbatov will be playing his football anywhere other than at Manchester United now this season.
