AMID the hype surrounding Dimitar Berbatov's deadline day move to Manchester United, there was little mention of the forgotten makeweight in the transfer.

While Bulgarian star Berbatov sealed his dream multi-million switch to Old Trafford just hours before the window closed, young striker Frazier Campbell was packing his bags and moving in the opposite direction.

His involvement in the transfer was purely as a deal sweetener.

The north Londoners were furious with United's approach for the Berbatov, claiming that they had not given the Premier League champions permission to hold talks with the striker.

Instead of going to war with the Red Devils, the Lilywhites eventually accepted a bid worth £30 million plus Campbell on loan for the season.

The 20-year-old had been heavily linked with a £7million move to Hull, where he had spent a successful period last season on loan and helped the Tigers achieve promotion to the top flight for the first time in their history.

Although be started in United's opening Premier League game with Newcastle, his move to Tottenham is a huge step forward.

The striker can do himself no harm at Spurs - if he does well he could be recalled by United or earn a permanent move to White Hart Lane.

If not, then the England under-21 international can still fall back on the extended first team experience he is likely to get with the Lilywhites.

The player himself therefore, would appear to be the real winner in the deal.
