Waltham Abbey 1
Potters Bar 0

(FA Cup, preliminary round - replay)

A SOLITARY goal from Harry Elmes moved Waltham Abbey into the next round of the FA Cup at Potters Bar's expense on Tuesday night.

The forward scored in the 16th minute, heading home a Denny Webb corner to settle a hard-fought encounter.

The teams had drawn the first game 1-1 at The South Mimms Travel Stadium on Saturday.

Then, the Abbots - who enjoyed the unusual event of a pre-match meal laid on by the Marriott Hotel prior to the game - got off to the best possible start when Marc Sontag opened the scoring on six minutes.

The midfielder burst through the Schloars' defence before cooly slotting home, taking his tally to four goals in four games.

But the hosts equalised on 55 minutes with a Serge Makofo penalty following a trip by David Eyres.

Abbey now entertain British Gas Midlands outfit Rothwell Town in the first qualifying round on September 13.

Delighted secretary Dave Hodges said: "It was a great win for us and, over the two games, something I think we deserved.

"We've now got a good chance of progressing with a home draw in the next round.

"A good FA Cup run would be a welcome boost to the club and the town, not just for finances but also helping to put us on the map.

Abbey return to Ryman League One North action at home to Great Wakering Rovers on Saturday.
