More needs to be done to reduce overcrowding at a busy station, a London Assembly candidate has claimed.
Sam Malik, Conservatives London Assembly candidate for Waltham Forest, said the situation had got out of hand.
He has written to commissioner of Transport for London (TfL), Mike Brown, asking him to personally intervene to sort issues out.
The 22-year-old, who lives in Chingford, said he feared the situation could lead to someone getting hurt.
He said: “I have seen first-hand the problem that the nonsensical arrangement of Oyster gates at Walthamstow Central station creates.
“It is now almost a year since all services came under TfL, plenty of time for this mess to be sorted out.
“There is a huge issue with overcrowding every rush hour, just looking on online forums you can see there are many people complaining about it.
“It is potentially dangerous because there is pushing and shoving, I worry that young children could be caught up in it.
“It is survival of the fittest at times.
“The least I can do is raise the issue with TfL, it knows about the issue so I hope it can sort it out.”
The solution, according to Mr Malik, is a simple rearrangement of the gates.
He added: “Remove the oyster gate line at the top of the escalators from the Victoria Line platforms.
“Move these gates to the tunnel leading to the bus station and to the southern exit to the Station Square.
“Re-open the link from the Overground to the Tube.
“This will lead to better flows of passengers as they interchange between the Tube and the Overground and split the flow of passengers between four entrances and exits, thus easing the crush which occurs far too often in the current arrangement.”
