The BROTHER of a councillor who died aged 34 has won the by-election triggered by his recent death.
Umar Ali becomes Waltham Forest's newest councillor after comfortably winning the William Morris by-election late last night.
Cllr Ali took home 1,923 votes against Rebecca Tully for The Greens with 524 votes.
Coming last was Afzal Akram, the disgraced ex-Labour councillor and ex-Ukip chairman, who scored 365 votes for the Conservatives.
The by-election was triggered by Cllr Ali's brother Nadeem Ali’s death.
The late Cllr Ali, who died on May 13, served as a Labour councillor in the Walthamstow ward since 2010.
He became the borough’s youngest ever mayor in 2013 at just 30 years of age.
The new Cllr Ali now follows in the family tradition of seeking political office, following in the footsteps of his father Liaquat Ali MBE, the council’s current cabinet member for transformation and commercial operations.
