CHRISTMAS carols of a difference brought a council meeting to a halt when cultural protestors descended on the Town Hall.

Dozens of people angry at council cuts sang their versions of the festive songs to councillors arriving for the full council meeting at the building in Forest Road, Walthamstow, last Wednesday.

When they brought their songs inside they made so much noise council Leader Clyde Loakes could not complete his speech, and councillors walked out.

The meeting was disturbed for ten minutes and the protestors were stopped from going back in once they had chosen to leave.

St James Street Library Campaign had planned to hand in a giant Christmas card, signed by local children and calling for the library to be reopened.

But they were unable to hand it to Cllr Loakes.

Library campaigner Caroline Molloy pledged to make sure he got his Christmas greetings before the big day.

It was the latest in a series of popular events calling for Walthamstow's St James Street Library to be reopened and for the council to stop destroying books.

On December 8, more than 100 people went to a fun day outside the closed library, decorating its windows, swapping books and playing party games.

The protest was arranged and the carols written in 24 hours and none of those present had no chance to rehearse.

It sounds like the point was made. Good luck with the next move.

Good luck to the protestors. Cllr Reardon said last week that the destroyed walthamstow library was an upgrade! How dare she say this - for several million quid we've got a glorified internet cafe with kids coming in to check out their facebook site and no books. Let's see some court action and prosecute her for pulping a quarter of a million books - no-one has the right to destroy public property in that way.

How not to run a Council

In April 2007 Labour Culture Portfolio holder closes St James Street Library without consulting the local community.
One year later the Labour Leader sacks the Labour Culture Portfolio holder.
The Labour Leader then appoints new Labour Culture Portfolio holder.
For last seven months the Labour Culture Portfolio holder and the Labour Leader are subject to intensive lobbying by St James Street Library campaigners.
So what’s the Labour Leader’s response?
He instructs the Executive Director of Children’s Services to contact Coppermill Primary School to ask Governors to open up the school library on Saturday’s for community use!
If the Labour Leader believes there is a need for a library facility at this end of High Street Ward why did he allow St James Street Library to close?
If the Labour Leader now believes there is a need for a limited library facility what a missed opportunity! Coppermill Primary School is currently being refurbished.
If there had been joined up thinking the new build at Coppermill would have been developed to provide a community library space. Such a move would have attracted additional funds into the school that could have paid for an expansion of the library that would also benefit the children at the school.

But Lib Dem councillors on the High Street Focus team: you also voted for St James Street library to be closed down!

You may have spoken up for the library in other meetings, but at the only one that counted, the budget meeting that finalised the decision, every one of you voted with the Labour vandals to close it. And you gave yourselves a huge pay rise at the same time.

The Lib Dems rule Waltham Forest in coalition with New Labour. There there are enough of you to force a chance in policy if you really wanted to.

The Lib Dems had many supporters in this area up till this year, but your involvement in the destruction of our libraries has changed that. It's not only the loss of St James Street, but also the book burning, the loss of qualified staff, the £10 million 'investment' programme that turns our surviving libraries into 'glorified internet cafes'.

It will take more than words on a Comments page to make you look like a credible alternative to the New Labour group now.

Is this real? Opening a school library on Saturdays as a substitute for the library the kids used to go to on the way home? What sort of sense is that? And are the rest of us meant to get a taste for year 4 geography, or what?

Converting Coppermill School to have library facilities on Saturday! What kind of brainwave is that? Is the public consulted on this? Is this what we, the residents, really want? Coppermill School is not the ideal solution to our communal need of a proper library. If conversion made on Coppermill school to accomodate this move - once again the Council's waste of public funding on wrong projects. Ideas are seemed to be thrusted on the community without any consultation as we really want. We have told them what we really want but they seem "deaf" to us!!!!
Wake up, Council leader Clyde Loakes, before a major calamity comes upon you and your council! Before tidying up the mess before it gets to the EARS OF NO 10 DOWNING STREET. BIG, BIG TROUBLE FOR YOU.

I sound like it hit councillors close to the bone. Egos deal with in in two way. Degrade the message and messenger as not real, inappropriate, nasty hobbits singing naughty carols etc; or face up to the fact there are problems, poor council decisions etc, and put these right, other come the next election a new crop of councillors will!

Well pointed out Conan - the Lib Dem councilors are a disgrace - why have they co-operated with this? Its time to contact the Lim Dem party machine to ask them what the hell is going on with the attitude of our local incompetents, and to enquire why exactly any of us traditional Lib Dem voters (or anyone for that matter) should support any more a party represented by such a local rabble, discredited as they are by getting into bed with these New Labour toadies. And yes, High Street Focus Team, I WILL be contacting the national party to demand an explanation, and a response from them as to the party's official line on council policy in Waltham Forest, and the dismissive attitude of the Lib Dem councilors towards their own constituents. And YES, I will make sure to publicise their response (or lack of response) in as many ways as possible - we have been seriously let down by the Lib Dem party in Waltham Forest, which looks like leaving us, as voters, only one option - the conservatives (as no-one in their right mind could vote for labour in Waltham Forest now) - lets see an immediate, and very contrite acquiescence from our disgraced Lib Dem council team on this and other scandalous matters in the borough.
