PLANS to convert a 130-year-old church into a nursery have been criticised.
Paul Samouelle, owner of Cambridge Park Methodist Church in Cambridge Park, Wanstead, submitted plans in May to replace the existing roof and make minor external alterations to accommodate a children's nursery.
The Conservation Advisory Panel, which includes councillors and members of the public, concluded on Wednesday that the proposed use of 'Marley' tiles would be "visually detrimental to the appearance of this prominent building in the Conservation Area".
Speaking after the meeting, Mr Samouelle said: "It's no big deal. I like to keep all the neighbours happy.
"I think I will make up some samples and see if that changes their minds."
A spokesman for the panel said: "We would comment that matching slate would be preferable, together with the use of matching materials and joinery for the windows."
No date has been set for a final decision on the proposal.
