WANSTEAD: Residents speak of horror following stabbing

RESIDENTS of a quiet Wanstead street have expressed shock after a man was stabbed in the leg while trying to buy a car.

The attack happened in Redbridge Lane West at the junction with Corbett Road at about 6.30pm on February 4, near Wanstead Leisure Centre.

A 40-year-old man was reportedly set upon and stabbed by the men who were selling the car.

Terry Butler, 49, a mother-of-one, said: “It's terrible. I didn't know anything about it. It's such a shock.

“I saw the police cordon on the road and wondered what was going on.”

Mrs Butler was at home at the time of the attack with her young son and his friend.

She added: “I hope they catch the people. It's really worrying.”

She also said a young girl was attacked and murdered near the scene several years ago.

Neighbour Robert Middleditch, 61, said the street was usually quiet and that the attack came as a surprise.

He said: “It's rather horrifying that these unfortunate things happen. The good thing is it's exceptional.

“I hope it's going to stay that way. You don't expect this sort of thing.”

Student Umar Raza, 21, added that he had never heard of a similar attack happening in the area.

He said: “It was a shock. I didn't know anything about it. The only attack I've heard about was in Leytonstone.”

The victim remains in Whipps Cross University Hospital but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Two men were arrested on Friday in connection with the attack.

As soon as I saw this story I thought: "I bet one of the residents of spotless and 100% crime-free Wanstead will mention Leytonstone."

There are no such things as safe areas anymore. Drug dealers and muggers will travel around and if an area/road is quiet, commit their crime there. If buying a car, maybe meet in a supermarket car park or petrol station, if the seller refuses then leave it as no cars not worth the risk.
