WAR veterans will join politicians, youth organisations and members of the public at Remembrance services across the borough.

Members of the Royal British Legion and the Association of Jewish Ex Servicemen and Women will stand alongside the Mayor Cllr Chris Cummins, and Leader of the Council Keith Prince, at an Armistice Day Service outside the Town Hall on November 11 at 10.50am.

On the same day, the Woodford & Wanstead branch of the Royal British Legion will take part in a service at the Garden of Remembrance in Snaresbrook Road, opposite Eagle Pond at 10.45am. Deputy Mayor, Cllr Felicity Banks will also be present.

Woodford & Wanstead Royal British Legion President, Norman Gower, who served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War, said: “Last year we had something like 300 people in Wanstead.

“We hope to match that this year.

“The silence is the most important two minutes of the year and we welcome anyone who wants to pay their respects.”

People will also gather at the site of a former airbase in Fairlop Waters at an event organised by the Fairlop Heritage Society.

During the Second World War, more than 1,000 men and women from 13 allied countries served at the three airfields which were located on the site.

Lee Scott MP and the Mayor will also be at the service which starts at 2pm, although anyone wishing to attend is asked to arrive at the club house for 1.30pm.

On November 12, at 9am, Chingford and Woodford Green MP Iain Duncan Smith will be joined by The Mayor and other local dignitaries at the war memorial outside St Mary’s Church in the High Road, South Woodford.

And on Remembrance Sunday (November 13), there will be services at the Ilford War Memorial in Eastern Avenue (9am), St Paul’s Church in Woodford Bridge (10am) and at the cenotaph in Wanstead High Street (12.30pm).

Members of the armed services, the Royal British Legion and the council’s party leaders will be joined by local MPs and MEPs at the War Memorial in Ilford.

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor will attend the service in Wanstead.
