West Ham’s Sam Byram has returned to the Championship, with the young full-back joining Nottingham Forest on a season-long loan.

The 24-year-old moved to the London Stadium in January 2016 after an impressive few seasons with Leeds United, but has struggled to nail down a regular place in the starting line-up, making just 36 appearances for the Hammers.

Last season was a frustrating one for Byram, with injury largely restricting him to 10 appearances in all competitions and with Manuel Pellegrini snapping up Ryan Fredericks earlier this summer from Fulham, the right-back has dropped further down the pecking order at the London Stadium.

Byram will now look to get his career back on track under former Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka at Forest, who have been held by both Bristol City and West Bromwich Albion in their first two Championship games of the season.

The full-back is the latest in a series of new faces who have moved to the City Ground this summer as part of Karanka’s revamp, with the likes of Lewis Grabban, Michael Dawson and Benfica’s Joao Carvalho all joining the Reds during the transfer window.

He could make his Forest debut against Reading later today.

Byram told Nottingham Forest’s website: "It feels really good. It has been rumoured for a while now but I am glad to be here and I can't wait to get started.

"The manager played a big part in me coming here and you can see the players he has brought in. There is a real push for promotion and I just want to come here, do my best and help the team.

"I had a bit of bad luck with injuries last year but now I am ready to go and I can't wait to get back out on the pitch."
