On Saturday it’s safe to say I wasn’t a very happy Hammer. The team were slow to get out of the blocks and Newcastle cUnited apitalised by scoring two goals early on.

New signing Jonjo Shelvey looked more effective than our entire midfield at times and the Toon Army made sure Mike Ashley had to give away a few free coats from Sports Direct.

In fact, I’m ashamed to admit I had to stop watching the game for a while and took a time out because I was just getting too wound up.

But, unlike defeats last season, I soon got over it, trudged back downstairs to continue watching the game and carried on with my weekend without it affecting me.

Why? There’s just a completely different mentality this campaign – in both the team and the fans. Last year, Twitter would have been full of people calling for Sam Allardyce’s head and sending abuse to David Gold.

Social networks were definitely a place to avoid if we hadn’t gained all three points by 5pm.

This time, fans were quick to highlight that Newcastle simply wanted the win more and that there were positives to the game; Nikica Jelavić scoring his first Premier League goal (pictured) and the team giving it their best to try to get back into the game in the second half.

We have also had games at opposite ends of the country in the space of a few days. Indeed, the ten teams that had both games away last week conceded 38 goals in total, with home teams letting in just 24 in comparison.

There’s also a different buzz around the players as well. There are a few bromances going on (Kouyate and Sakho are probably the prime example) and the team just seem to gel a lot better this year.

Players like Dimitri Payet, Angelo Ogbonna and Adrian are really quick to publicly praise fans, and always add their thoughts on a game to social media soon after the final whistle has blown.

The players weren’t so quick to do this last year, and it makes a lot of difference – especially to younger fans wanting interaction with their heroes. As well as that, Bilic is always completely honest after games. It’s so refreshing to hear.

We’re always going to lose some games – it’s part of being in the best and most competitive league in the world. I have still seen a few people moaning and demanding that Slaven Bilic be sacked immediately but you can’t please everyone and some just love to be negative.

However, bar a small blip in that first half against the Magpies on Saturday, I’m a very happy Hammer indeed.

And I’m really pleased to see the majority of fans are seeing the positives too – long may it continue!
