A synagogue was packed out for a one-woman show based on the diaries of a young Jewish woman living in Amsterdam during the Nazi occupation.
Susan Stein perfomed her show, Etty, at the Woodford Liberal Synagogue in Marlborough Road, South Woodford on January 9.
The play is based on the diaries and letters of Etty Hillesum and charts her struggle for survival between 1941 and 1943 before she was deported to Auschwitz.
The show was particularly poignant for Rabbi Harry Jacobi, the father of Woodford Liberal Synagogue Rabbi, Richard Jacobi.
He lived in Amsterdam between 1939 and 1940, and said: “It was an extraordinary evening and brought back many emotional memories to me."
