A toddler was left with a broken collarbone after he and his mother were targeted in a racist attack.

The two-year-old was in  a buggy when his mother was dragged to the ground along with the pushchair at Highams Park Station yesterday, breaking his collarbone.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a black man in his 40s approached the 30-year-old mother, also black, at Walthamstow Central.

They both boarded a train to Chingford at about 3pm, and during the journey the man began to abuse the woman for having a mixed race son.

As the train arrived at Highams Park the woman got off with her buggy, but the man followed her and pulled her to the ground by her hair, tipping over the pushchair too.

The man, of slim build and about 5ft 10inches tall, wearing a beanie with fake plaited hair underneath, a grey and brown top and jogging bottoms and trainers, then left the station.

Police who searched the area could not find him. CCTV from the train, station and the surrounding area has been requested by detectives to view the incident and try and trace him.

The toddler has since been discharged from hospital and his mother was unharmed.
