Teenagers who have gone the extra mile to contribute to their schools beyond their studies are due to be marked with a celebration event.

The pupils at schools across the district have been put forward for Jack Petchey Foundation awards and are due to be handed medals at Epping Forest College on Thursday.

Their good deeds range from raising thousands of pounds for charity and raising awareness of disease to dedicating their spare time to helping other pupils and they have all been awarded.

Harriet McCann, 18, a pupil at Davenant Foundation School in Loughton, has been nominated by teacher David Parker for organising an event for Children in Need despite joining half way through the upper school.

Mr Parker said: “Harriet led the most successful ever Children in Need fundraiser in school history.

“She has become a highly valued member of the community and was nominated by her team and the teachers who taught her.”

Debden Park High School pupil Callum Long, 14, has been nominated for helping younger children with sports events, especially rugby, often giving up his holidays.

Lucy Burgess, 18, who is studying hospitality at Epping Forest College, is up for an award for her progress and dedication to helping keep the facilities there in order.

Sam Withers, 15, a pupil at St John’s School in Epping, is also nominated for organising a Children in Need event while keeping up her school work and Jack Heady, also 15, is up for the award for his work helping in the library at King Harold Business and Enterprise Academy in Waltham Abbey.

Roding Valley High School pupil Felicity Hale has been nominated for raising awareness of Huntingdon’s disease, which her family has a history of, and raising £1,500 for charity.
