THE Central Line is one of the few Tube lines to have improved performance, according to figures published by the London Assembly.

Central Line Tube trains currently arrive at their destinations less than six minutes after their scheduled arrival, down by nearly half a minute from recorded delays over 2004 and 2005.

Over half of the delays on the Central Line are caused by small incidents, variations in service regularity and on-train crowding.

Out of the 11 lines which the figures covered, only four showed any significant improvement since 2003.

The figures also showed that Infracos, the companies responsible for maintenance and renewal of stations, track, tunnels and signals, are responsible for less than 20 per cent of delays.

Roger Evans, London Assembly Conservative spokesman on transport, and member for Redbridge and Havering, said: "The Infracos have badly underperformed, but these figures show that they are just one contributory factor to the problem.

"The Mayor needs to put his own house in order, rather than choose the easy get out clause by scapegoating the Infracos."
