SQUATTERS have lost their battle against eviction from an historic Wanstead building.

Kevin Alderson, one of a dozen people who have lived in the Corner House, Grove Park, since September, is now worried Redbridge Council, which was recently granted a repossession order for the C19th property, will evict them over Christmas.

Mr Alderson claims the squatters, whose four-month occupation of the building has prevented it being refurbished for use as a day centre for the elderly, will leave peacefully if a specific eviction date can be agreed.

He said: "We are on an eviction waiting list at the bailiff's office which means we could be kicked out at any time, from tomorrow to a couple of months, which is not a nice feeling so close to Christmas.

"We don't want to cause any unnecessary problems for the council, and by agreeing a leaving date we can avoid them having to spend money on bailiff fees."

Snaresbrook ward councillor, Sue Nolan, is delighted the building will soon be back in council hands, but is concerned for the squatters' welfare over the festive period.

She said: "I am pleased that the council has been successful in its application to regain control of the Corner House and that the plans for its use as a community facility can be progressed.

"We have to remember the welfare of the squatters though, and I think it would be a bit harsh to see them go without a roof over their heads at Christmas."

The squatters, who include professional artists and musicians, have been praised by several members of the Wanstead Society for maintaining the building's garden during their stay.

A council spokesman said bailiffs have been instructed to evict to serve the order and to evict the squatters as soon as possible.
