Work has begun on the £5million refurbishment of libraries across Waltham Forest.

Leyton Library in High Road was the first to close today ahead of modernisation work.

Leytonstone, Walthamstow and Chingford libraries will be turned into ‘Library Plus’ venues over two years.

In Leyton a new IT suite being will be built on the ground floor, with improvements to wi-fi internet services throughout the building.

The first floor will house a library for adults and a larger children’s library with a new activity space and storytelling area.

Teenagers will be able to use a dedicated young adults library and a study space with computers.

Other libraries will get new computer facilities and books, along with easier access to a range of council services.

Leyton library will remain closed until February next year.

Two temporary libraries will open while the work is underway.

Leyton Youth Centre in Crawley Road will open from Thursday and Sidmouth House in Sidmouth Road will open from Saturday.

Both libraries will house a mix of books and computers.

All other libraries will remain open during the closure.
